Well, its sort of arcane. We're a financial services company, and so there's a lot of financial data on these boxes, not to mention customer billing stuff. We developers are apparently nefarious people who might go and muck around with this stuff. We aren't virtuous and trustworthy like production people.

Theoretically its a very good idea to separate production and development. Theoretically it'll me that I can start focusing on doing my actual job instead of the job of the production department plus my job. Theoretially...
