Guest Starring is Fun

I got to guest star in Hippocratic Oath on Saturday. I'd done it once before and had a blast both times. I tried to be good about not hogging the spotlight.

I played the same character as I had the last time. She's been dubbed "our favorite crack-head" by the PCs. One of the great things about guest starring is that you get to play a character that the GMs have created for you. This means its not the typical "Elizabeth character", and I'm forced to play something a bit different than I usually pick for myself. Playing a drug-using character is interesting that way. I'm so anti-drugs myself that it just wouldn't occur to me to try a character who used them, much less one who wasn't concerned about the addiction. The only thing I've ever been addicted to is caffine, and I quit cold turkey over four months ago (except for small amounts of chocolate). On the other hand the character has some qualities that I really identify with, like stubborness, independance, and an penchant for single-minded determination. She's a fun character to play.

New Weights

My gym finally got in new hand weights for the exercise studios. Ever since I've been going there, there just haven't been enough sets of 15 pound weights to go around. The new wieghts are nice, and they go up to 17.5 pounds. That's a good weight for me now for bicep curls and other heavy weight exercises, but it doesn't leave any room to grow. If my strength stat continues to go up I'm going to have to do the juggling two weights in each hand thing, and that's just awkward. At least you don't have to show up 15 minutes early to get the heavier weights anymore, but I was still 5 minutes early and snagged the last pair of 17.5s. You'd think at an all-female gym that they'd understand that women can get strong.

Shall we not dance?

So in an effort to avoid doing work before I head off to the dentist, I thought I'd review the movie.

The original Japanese "Shall We Dance" was a great movie. In fact, its the first movie that Warren and I saw together. Warren felt compelled to see the American remake even though we knew it would be a let down after the original.

It wasn't as bad as it could have been. It was fairly faithful to the Japanese version, with some minor changes made to accomodate the cultural differences between the US and Japan. Most of these changes were really well done, especially with the character of the Donnie Burns wannabe. There was one that wasn't well done. The older instructor is now the studio owner (which is fine), but she takes swigs of alcohol before lessons. In the Japanese version the older instructor was the most stable an well adjusted person in the film, a really strong character.

Then there's the whole JLo thing. I knew casting her in the lead female role would be terrible, and I wasn't disappointed. Even worse, her character is now supposed to be a Blackpool finalist, not just a semi-finalsit. She may have been credible as a latin dancer, but she just isn't the standard dancer type. Wrong body type, wrong way of movement, wrong attitude, wrong everything. Her standard was bad. She's not credible as a silver level finalist. By contrast, the Japanese actress who had the part looked like she could have been at that level. Of course they had the sense to use the top pro Japanese couple as body doubles for her and her partner in the dancing seens. She did a few lines on camera though, and she did them much better than JLo. The person playing the older female student was a much better standard dancer than JLo and it showed.

Its not just the dancing that made JLo wrong for the part. She didn't have the right attitude for it either. They took out the whole dance for enjoyment/dance with your partner theme and she still was terrible. They left in the "Don't dance if that's what your after," scene and it was bad. The Japanese actress was plenty demure enough to carry off the scene, the message of which is 'I dance for the sake of dance, not sex. I'm not here to be hit on." I'm doubt JLo even realized that, so its no surprise she can't convey it.

Warren liked the movie more than I did, mostly because the JLo stuff bothered him less. Usually when you're watching dancing you tend to focus on the person doing your part more, so we think that's the reason.

Vampire Chipmunk

Well, the wisdom teeth are out. The oral surgeon did revise his estimate upwards from a 1 to a 3-4 difficulty. The bottom ones were happy where they were and didn't feel like moving. I ended up with sutures down there and a perscription for antibiotics.

Of course taking the initial 2 pill does just now was an adventure. When I took the gaze pads out a large amount of blood started pouring over my numb bottom lip making me look like a vampire who was a messy eater. That was kind of cool. On the other hand they shot me so full of novacane that I can't feel my tongue, bottom lip, or really any part of my face below my upper lip. This make swallowing pills a bit pesky.

The good part of said novacane overdoes is that I don't feel a darn thing except for a dull ache on the bottom left, which proved to be the peskiest tooth. I expect that will change as feeling returns to those regions. They sent me away with drugs, so I'm not too concerned.

Its a good thing I canceled the run. I'm unable to articulate anything at the moment due to near total lack of control over my tongue. Given the massive does I'm wondering if it would even wear off by run time.

I'd better go ice my face, lest I turn into vampire chipmunk. The shock of turning up at the get together of my players with blood oozing from around my fangs would be undermined if I also looked like I was storing nuts back there.
