Revising plans for downstairs
Warren's Mom spent Thanksgiving with us. She arrived on Wednesday morning, and left on Friday afternoon. I got less cleaning done than I'd hoped, but I did manage to transform the back bedroom from gaming room to guest bedroom in time, so it was OK.

Part of the plan was to get her to look at the downstairs apartment and tell us what fixes she would want made to it before she moves in. (The boys who break things moved out at the end of October.) She had a laundry list of things she wanted done (completely reconfigure the kitchen, including moving the sink, stove, washer/dryer, and possibly tearing out the pantry, redo all the ceilings, new bathroom including tile floor, etc) but then said she wouldn't move in. To say it was frustrating would be an understatement. Part of the frustration is probably the language barrier; her English isn't great. We wrangled a bit. It looks like the current version of the plan might be that we fix up the bathroom enough to get the place rented, then maybe in 18 months or so she'll move it. That means finding a tenant for only a year. It also means that the hallway wallpaper in our apartment won't get changed anytime soon, since we'd want to do the downstairs parlor and hallway at the same time, but such is life.

The good news is that she seems to be in better health these days, so maybe she'll be OK on her own a while longer. To be totally honest its not like I'm thrilled at the prospect of her moving in with us, but last winter when she was sick it seemed like the best long term solution. She lives in DC, so we obviously can't take care of her with her there. Warren's brother George and his wife Brittany live in NYC. Poor Brittany ended up having to make several trips down to help her out last year. Since Brittany is a professional dancer and doesn't have a regular work schedule it seems like Warren's mom is happy to impose on her. It seems like she equates no regular work hours to not working, which is unfair, but Brittany is too nice to point this out. I just worry about what's going to happen the next time Warren's mom becomes too ill to leave the house. Brittany is currently heavily pregnant, and she'll have an infant to take care of come mid to late December, so she's not going to be taking any more emergency train trips to DC.

I suppose it'll all work out in the end. We did at least pick out wallpaper for whenever that'll get done.

Renovations always sound like fun, until you consider the expense and the time spent parts of your house off limits. But the results are usually nice...
